Basic Counselling Skills

Location: Vancouver Community College (Downtown Campus)

Program Summary:

This course is geared towards those interested in the field of counselling. Students are introduced to the foundational skills required for effective counselling and interviewing. An important focus of this course is to provide participants with experiential learning regarding the client-counsellor relationship. The course examines the nature and process of client-centered counselling; teaches skills foundational to most models of counselling and practice in a supervised setting.

Program Learning Outcomes:

On completion of Basic Counselling Skills, students will learn:

• counselling as a developmental process;
• the importance of self awareness;
• the role of the counselling relationship in effecting change;
• facilitation of client self exploration;
• the importance of counsellor empathy;
• appreciation of ethics, diversity and personal and professional development.
