"A book is a gift you can open again and again" - unknown
The CPHR BC & Yukon HR Book Club is held monthly via Zoom. Books range in topics and are chosen as a group by members. The purpose of this Book Club is to motivate, connect, and foster self-growth while building a stronger HR community. The Book Club is open to all members of the association.
Our Book Club discussion is centered around the chosen book through a series of prompts and questions. While it is not necessary to read the book in advance it is recommended that you familiarize yourself with the content. It is preferred that the book is read and there are several ways you can access reading materials, including your local library, both in person and through an online app like Libby, asking friends if they have a copy, or purchasing from your local bookstore.
To succeed in a fast-changing world, individuals and companies know they must create a culture of growth, where experimentation and feedback are encouraged, and learning is integrated into the everyday. Yet we often get stuck in a well-worn pattern of habits that don’t move us forward. Why?
Because many of us get trapped in the Performance Paradox: the counterintuitive phenomenon that if we focus only on performing, our performance suffers.
How can we give ourselves the space to experiment and grow while also delivering high-level results?
Fostering growth mindset to elevate performance is Eduardo Briceño’s specialty. As CEO of Mindset Works and in his work with Fortune 500 companies, he discovered that mastering growth—personal, organizational, and financial—hinges on navigating the crucial balance between learning and performing.
HR Book Club Hosts:
Kara Geransky, CPHR first began her Human Resources career working in the hospitality industry. As a manager, she saw the importance of structured policies, employee engagement programs and building training materials to support on-boarding. With a passion for leading, Kara enrolled in Kwantlen's Human Resources Management, BBA program and took her work experience into the classroom, building performance management systems, safety training and completed the program with an eagerness to continue to learn. After 20 years in hospitality, she took her HR career down a new path into the construction industry and has since explored a career in the non-profit sector. Most recently, Kara has returned to the field of HR and is now the Manager of People & Culture at McTavish Resource & Management Consultants Ltd. As a member of the CPHR BC & Yukon HR Book Club since 2021, Kara is delighted to co-host the Book Club and enjoys the engaging conversations at each month’s meeting!
Ashley Chrysler is a CPHR student who was born and raised in beautiful British Columbia. She has an extensive background in hospitality and customer service and holds a BA in Psychology from SFU. She has a passion for community and bringing people together to create a sense of belonging. Over the past decade she has volunteered as an executive board member for many community driven organizations and is currently working part-time as an Executive Director and Event Producer for a small Vancouver based non-profit that hosts an annual international cybersecurity conference that focuses on building community, networking, and continuing education for cybersecurity professionals. Over the course of the pandemic, Ashley decided to embark on a career change that would complement her skill set and is now in the process of completing her Post-Baccalaureate Advanced Human Resources Management Diploma at Douglas College.
Heather Girdler has worked in Human Resources since 2017 and has been a CPHR since 2020. She has worked as an HR Generalist in the construction industry and currently as the HR Manager for the economic development arm of a local First Nation. Fun fact: she may soon be part of three separate book clubs.
