Job Seeking Refresher for Newcomers – A Panel Discussion

Date: April 22, 2021
Location: Online

CPD Hours: 1.5

Career Advancement Network Special Event for Newcomers to Canada

Coming to a new country and learning new ways of belonging in the workplace can be challenging and may seem overwhelming at times.  Connecting with others who have made this journey can be affirming (it's not just me) and helpful (I could try that too!).

During this special edition of the Career Advancement Network, especially for Newcomers to Canada (in the last five years) we'll hear from members who have "been there/done that" and the challenges and opportunities they encountered along the way.

Our facilitator and panel members
will share their stories and  talk about the tools and strategies that helped them showcase their transferable skills as well as tips to finding employment in Canada which they feel made a difference in their career journey as a newcomer.

Roundtable Facilitator:  Zuhal Uluturk, CPHR, started her professional career in the audit department in the finance industry where she had the opportunity to understand the workplace from both an employee and management lens. From there she decided to follow a different path and pursue a career in Human Resources. Her passion for delivering an exceptional employee experience has helped her to design operating models which put employees first. Leading cross-departmental projects through mergers, acquisitions, fast-growth periods both in unionized and non-unionized workplaces, she learned to transform business strategy into supporting HR initiatives. As a woman leader, she paved the path to gender equality at all positions. Walking her talk, she has been a life-long learner, earned her MBA in Business Administration as well as her CPHR designation, received the Canadian Employment Law certificate from BCIT, and is currently working towards a designation in mediation and arbitration. There is no doubt that being a newcomer has been one of her greatest challenges and joy! She is always happy to share her lessons learned, and facilitate discussion around where you can find some tips for success in your "new home”.

Guest Panelist(s):

Eli Yanga, CPHR, is an HR professional who immigrated to Canada from the Philippines last June 2020. He is currently a Change Advisor at the BC Liquor Distribution Branch.  He is a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion and he is also an active volunteer with immigrant social services, coaching and helping immigrants like himself navigate the Canadian job market.
