SPEAKER BIOS:
Keynote Session: Legal Update - What's New / What's Important Adriana Wills, Harris & Company Adriana advises and advocates for clients on workplace law matters, with emphasis on labour relations, human rights, and employment issues. While representing clients in both the public and private sectors, she has particular expertise with municipal and health employers, and with the broader public sector, including crown corporations. Adriana combines the foundational belief that clients want practical solutions to workplace problems with over 30 years’ experience with employment relationships, particularly unionized workplace environments. Clients regularly consult Adriana prior to taking action, enabling the practical issues and problems to be assessed in a legal context. Adriana’s approach is to acquire in-depth knowledge of a client’s operations, business objectives, and other factors, enabling her to provide options which are relevant, contextual, and avoid legal and other risks. Adriana has developed and presented training ranging from first-line supervisory skills to more complex subjects relating to the application of human rights principles. She believes in working as part of the employer’s team to ensure managers and supervisors are aware of potential pitfalls and know to seek advice in a timely way. As an advocate, Adriana is focused and relentless. She has appeared before arbitration boards, the Labour Relations Board, the Human Rights Tribunal, and at the BC Supreme Court and Court of Appeal.
Keynote Session: Just Dismissals (But Not Just Dismissals) Cameron Wardell, Mathews, Dinsdale & Clark LLP Cam is a partner at Mathews, Dinsdale & Clark LLP, where he practices labour and employment law. While focusing on litigation, Cam has assisted employers with a wide range of other matters, including the preparation of employment contracts and employment policies, collective bargaining and dispute resolution before labour, employment, human rights and other administrative tribunals. Cam has appeared before all levels of court in British Columbia, as well as various administrative tribunals and the Federal Court. Cam is one of the editors of CanLii's new BC Litigation Practice Manual. Cam is also a past Chair of the Canadian Bar Association BC Branch Civil Litigation (Vancouver) Section, as well as the Employment Law Section. Cam's legal education included a co-op term working in labour law, as well as a term studying at St. Peter’s College in Oxford. After law school, Cam was a judicial law clerk at the Supreme Court of British Columbia in Vancouver.
Keynote Workshop: Anti Bullying & Harassment Fred Alaggia, CPHR, College of New Caledonia Fred Alaggia, CPHR has been a HR practitioner since 1980. He is currently the Executive Director of Human Resources at the College of New Caledonia. Fred's practice has focused significantly on labour relations with thirteen years at Canada Post as Regional Manager of Labour Relations for the Prairie Division and eleven years at Northern Health as Manager of Human Resources. However, his roles in Northern Health and CNC have seen an increased focus on developing and supporting strategic planning and initiatives, human rights, organizational development, and career planning and executive development. Fred also managed his own consulting firm providing labour relations support, policy development and bullying and harassment investigations which had been a significant part of his focus during the past decade preceding his work with CNC.

Mini Super Session: The Pathway from the Doctor’s Note to Return to Work Dr. Gene Vitug, Select Health Dr. Gene Vitug, Chief Medical Officer of Select Health is triple board certified in occupational medicine, sport and exercise medicine as well as family medicine. Dr. Vitug brings over 25 years of experience working with the Department of National Defence, RCMP, CP Rail, Department of Veterans affairs, various oil/energy companies such as Syncrude, Suncor, CNRL, Kiewit, Emil Anderson. Dr. Vitug has also consulted for review of complex employer files, working with lawyers for DVA claims, reviewing entitlement and attribution, disability assessments as well as review of accommodations

Keynote Session: Psychologically Safe Workplaces: Do You Have One? Irina Doering, PhD (I/O Psych), CPHR, Diversity Coach Irina has spent several years in leadership and has direct experience in business management within non & unionized environments and non & for-profit organizations. When she isn't teaching or spending time with her 3 sons and their fur baby, Irina is an active volunteer in the community and developing these organizations is her passion as she is drawn to opportunities for coaching and organizational development. Her research interests include employee engagement and the development of psychologically safe workplaces. Irina earned her PhD from Adler University in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, her Provincial Instructor Diploma from Vancouver Community College, is a Certified Diversity Coach and a designated Chartered Professional in Human Resources; she serves on the CPHR BC and Yukon Northern Advisory Council.

Keynote Session: Evaluating and Evolving Recruitment and Retention Strategies Sarah Best, Go2HR Based in Prince George, Sarah is go2HR’s Regional Consultant for Northern BC, supporting Tourism and Hospitality sector employers and leaders with their Human Resources needs. Prior to merging fully into human resources as both a consultant and an HR Manager, Sarah worked in health authority and governmental contracts in mental health administration, employment counselling and both adult and youth training facilitation. Sarah is a forward thinking and action-oriented empowering strategist, who has experience in supporting companies and leadership teams in all areas of Human Resources, while maintaining the unique perspective and appreciation that human capital is every organization’s greatest asset.

Super Mini Session: What Are We Missing? Terri Eriksen, B.B.A., CPHR, Navy & Sage Benefits Terri was born and raised in Saskatchewan, and has spent her entire career working in Western Canada. After spending several years in Regina, Terri moved to BC and now calls the Okanagan home. Terri supports her clients by providing strategic advice, empowering them to make the best decision for their company. Terri began her career in the Employee Benefits world working in an HR generalist role, as a plan administrator for a large private company in Saskatchewan. Her experience also includes working at a provincial Workers’ Compensation Board, and in Disability Management with two provincial Health Authorities. Prior to establishing Navy & Sage Benefits, Terri worked as a Group Benefits Consultant and Director of Operations for a local benefits brokerage firm. Terri achieved her Chartered Professional Human Resource (CPHR) designation in 2010 and has been actively participating in her provincial Association since 2007. Terri values a close tie to her community and enjoys participating on the Summerland Credit Union Board of Directors. She enjoys spending time with family and friends, and exploring the Okanagan Valley wineries and beaches.
Corrie Omand, Navy & Sage Benefits Corrie's clients consider her to be a trusted and valued partner. She understands that success and meaningful advice only comes by fully understanding a client’s business and their needs. Through a strong customer-first focus, Corrie assists her clients in taking care of their employees through well-designed and actively-managed cost-effective benefits plans. Prior to starting Navy and Sage Benefits Corrie began her career in the Employee Benefits world as a Group Benefits Consultant and then Business Development Manager for one of Western Canada’s leading benefit brokerage firms. Her earlier experience includes working with Disability Management, Return-to-Work Services and Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) as well as being the Executive Director for a BIA (Business Improvement Area), collaborating with municipal government to enhance their commercial sector. When not volunteering in the community and spending time with her family, Corrie stays active through running, hiking, mountain biking and mixed slo-pitch. Corrie loves to be outside and is always on the lookout for new exciting experiences that keep her smiling.
