Event Summary: Brand New Roundtable for the Cowichan Valley!
HR practitioners gather to top up their knowledge, share successes and
lessons-learned, and take-away practical tips, tools and techniques. Participants are encouraged to bring
real-life HR-related scenarios, challenges/questions and/or best-practices that
they would like to share and/or see discussed by the group. The Roundtable
Leader will guide the dialogue and encourage participation.
Topic: Working in Distributed Teams
Where you work (the place) is no longer limited by where you work (the organization). Technology and the gig economy have given us the ability to create teams that are not limited by geography. As HR professionals, this provides opportunities but also poses some challenges. Indeed, some of us may be part of distributed teams ourselves. In this roundtable session, we’ll have a short presentation followed by discussion and sharing of successes and opportunities.
As this is the first Cowichan Valley roundtable after a significant hiatus, the session will include a discussion of how to make this group viable and sustainable in the future. If you have ideas for future topics and/or presenters, please bring your suggestions along.
Roundtable Lead(s): Ilka Bene, CPHR, is currently Senior Manager, Strategic Projects
within People Services with First West Credit Union (you’ll recognize the local brand as Island Savings). This role has her
engaged in initiatives related First West’s future growth, including a
significant focus on culture and change. She provides strategic advice to
senior leaders in the Credit Union, where she uses her influence to connect the
power of people to the purpose of the organization. The merger of Island
Savings with First West in 2015 was very successful largely because of this
focus on people and purpose. Before joining the Credit Union, Ilka held several
roles with BC Ferries in Victoria and, before that, served the public service
in Alberta.
Through her career, her simple purpose statement
“helping people work together better” has served her well and has most recently
led her to explore the role of culture, the changing nature of work, and the
place that work has in our lives. She is an active mentor and
volunteer. In 2017, Ilka was the recipient of the Chartered Professionals
in Human Resources (CPHR BC & Yukon) HR Professional of the Year award.
Roundtable Lead(s): Adam Bishop, CPHR Candidate, is
currently a Talent Acquisition Specialist within People Services with First
West Credit Union. In this role he specializes in both Talent Acquisition and
Employee and Labour Relations, which allows him to continue fostering First
West’s pride in not only serving the needs of its members and employees, but
it’s community at large. This work has also allowed him to spearhead
initiatives that breakdown employment barriers for people with disabilities.
Adam's previous experience in human resources focused in the public-sector at
Island Health and ISM Canada, an IBM company in both Talent Acquisition,
Disability Management and Occupational Health & Safety.
