HR BOOK CLUB - The 4 Stages of Psychological Safety

The CPHR BC & Yukon Book Club, open to all members regardless of your level or area of practice, will be held monthly via Zoom. The books will range in topics and will be chosen as a group by the CPHR Book Club members. The purpose of this Book Club is to motivate, connect, and foster self-growth while building a stronger HR community. The Book Club is open to all members of the association and is hosted by members of the Vancouver Island Region.

This is the first practical, hands-on guide that shows how leaders can build psychological safety in their organization, creating an environment where employees feel fully engaged and encouraged to contribute their best ideas.

Fear has a profoundly negative impact on engagement, learning efficacy, productivity, and innovation, but until now there has been a lack of practical information on how to make employees feel safe about speaking up and contributing. Timothy Clark, a social scientist and an organizational consultant, provides a framework to move people through successive stages of psychological safety. The first stage is member safety--the team accepts you and grants you shared identity. Learner safety, the second stage, indicates that you feel safe to ask questions, experiment, and even make mistakes. Next is the third stage of contributor safety, where you feel comfortable participating as an active and full-fledged member of the team. Finally, the fourth stage of challenger safety allows you to take on the status quo without repercussion, reprisal, or the risk of tarnishing your personal standing and reputation. This is a blueprint for how any leader can build positive, supportive, and encouraging cultures in any setting.


HR Book Club Hosts:

Olga Radutsky, CPHR, is a Human Resources professional with 10+ years of experience across multiple industries and areas of HR practice. Olga holds an Advanced Diploma in Human Resource Management and Leadership from Camosun College and is an active member of the HR community. She is employed as the Human Resources Manager with a local tech company, Reliable Controls. Olga’s areas of focus are effective performance management practices, employee empowerment, leadership development and change management. She is looking forward to co-hosting the CPHR BC & Yukon HR Book Club, sharing ideas and learning from each other.
Kayli Smith is passionate about learning, connection, and improving people’s work lives. Kayli holds a Bachelor of Business Administration, Human Resource Management & Leadership and a Diploma in Tourism Management from Camosun College, and is working towards her CPHR designation. She currently works as a People & Talent Advisor at Engaged HR. Kayli believes in the power of community and is looking forward to sharing this space with all of you each month!
